Soluta
Accounting on autopilot · for small companies

Accounts that show their working.

Every figure on the statements traces back to the ledger line it came from, and to the person who decided where that line belongs. Six months later, you can still answer the question an inspector actually asks: who decided this, and when?

To be exact: that anchoring must be switched on and running well BEFORE anything goes wrong. Anchor afterwards and you only prove things from that point on.

Statutory accounts — the whole set, not the balancing half

An annual report and financial statements is four parts: balance sheet, income statement, notes, directors’ report. Soluta issues all four as one bound document, in the Companies Act formats (SI 2008/409 Sch.1, Format 1 or Format 2), with comparatives.

For companies using the small companies regime. Micro-entity formats (Section C) and the medium and large company formats (SI 2008/410) are not supported yet.

If the notes or the directors’ report are missing, it refuses to print. CA 2006 s396(1) puts the notes inside “the accounts” — a document without them balances, but it is not what the Act calls financial statements.

It walks the 21 statutory notes and the 4 Schedule 5 items one by one, and prints how many you reviewed and found not applicable. Omitted because you have none and omitted because someone forgot read exactly the same on paper; that count is what tells them apart.

VAT — the nine boxes, computed from the ledger

Boxes 1–5 to two decimals, boxes 6–9 as integers, rounded half up — the two different rounding rules HMRC’s own specification asks for, on one return.

It asks about the three EU/NI boxes instead of assuming: the ledger does not record which border goods crossed. 0 because there was none and 0 because the ledger never recorded it, print the same figure — and one of them is an under-declaration.

It also tells you, by account code, which purchases it is about to put in box 7 — because wages, PAYE and NI all carry the same role as any other cost, and box 7 excludes them (VAT Notice 700/12 §3.8). Left alone, box 7 overstates at almost every business with a payroll.

The legislation behind it, kept where you can check it

The rules Soluta applies come from the legislation itself — held in the product, with a checksum for every file and, for each document we did not write ourselves, its source URL; plus a record of which amendments the stored text does not yet include. When the code cites a regulation, a test checks that citation against that record.

Ready to file

Soluta prepares the return and the accounts for you to submit through your HMRC-recognised filing route. Submitting a VAT return under Making Tax Digital needs HMRC-recognised software and a Government Gateway account. We build the request — URL, body, fraud-prevention headers, the box constraints — and stop at the last step.

Where your books live depends on your edition

Desktop edition: the ledger core runs on your own machine and keeps working offline. Web edition: your books run on our servers, one box per company, with nothing to install. Either way, the route table states exactly where your data goes.
